Last week, Google officially announced that they'll be adding credit in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for sites with an SSL 2048-bit encryption enabled. Excited yet? Well, you may not believe it but you should be. A little, anyway. Because for any client seeking to be competitive in SEO, this is an investment opportunity to jump on — especially if you want to get the jump on most everyone else.
What does this mean for you? In short: speed and security. A strong and secure HTTPS encryption - a security that would be the default with Google's offer - ensures that people using Gmail, Google Drive, etc. will have a secure connection to Google at all times. (We'll just leave aside the very obvious point that secure connection would've been nice beforehand...but oh well, you take what you can get.)
Expanding their new focus on security, Google has also announced webmasters for hacked sites — or sites that may soon be hacked. Their grander focus is on "HTTPS," the layered Hypertext Transfer Protocol that seeks to prevent breaches — needless to say, very important for any business owner who seeks to expand their marketing and business acumen across the web. More people have been making the adjustment to HTTPS anyway, but Google is seeking to give everyone one more polite reminder...presumably before everyone gets hacked and Google can then say, "We told you so!"
The three biggest points to consider (and/or make use of):
~Determine which kind of certificate your business would be best suited to (i.e. single, multi-domain, etc.);
~Use relative URLs on the secure domain;
~Allow search engines to index your page.
